If you needed the money desparately enough, would you participate in a clinical trial of a new drug?

Let's say its never been tested before on humans - your life is in shambles due to money woes and your life has spiraled out of control so much that the risks of the drug killing you are the last thing you're worried about. The study pays a couple thousasnd dollars and you need to stay in a research facility for a certain number of nights. Do you do it? Has anyone participated in a phase one trial and how likely is it that these drugs could make you a cripple for life. They at least have some confidence that it won't like paralyze or blind you before giving it to you, right?
