Building highways vs conserving the environment. Hmm help me out would you?

I was recently offered an internship with ODOT (ohio department of transportation). They build bridges and reconstruct highways. However, my major is conservation biology, and I am wondering how the two are related and if there are any contradicting ethics with conserving the environment vs building highways.
