Is hyper-pigmentation a hereditary trait?

i think that it is. if you looked at michael jackson who had pigmentation problems (vittlaigo) and now his son prince also has some traces of it, i noticed the other day on oprah, on his forearms. poor kid. but i see his siter Paris didn't have these issues. so i guess it can go either way.
